Legend

  • DMR: Supports DMR/MotoTRBO digital mode
  • GPS: Has GPS for automatic location-based scanning

Understanding the Categories

Budget ($35–$130)

Analog-only or SDR options. The BC75XLT and BC125AT are traditional scanners that only work with older analog systemsβ€”most urban/suburban departments have moved to digital. The RTL-SDR is technically capable but requires a computer and significant learning.

Only buy these if you're certain your area uses analog, or you want to experiment with SDR.

Mid-Range ($400–$550)

Where most buyers should look. These handle digital P25 systems used by most police departments. The BCD436HP and HomePatrol-2 include GPS auto-locationβ€”enter your zip code and start listening. The Whistler TRX series offers an alternative interface.

Best value for money. The BCD436HP is our top recommendation for most users.

Premium ($550–$800)

For enthusiasts and professionals. The SDS100/SDS200 add DMR and NXDN decoding, True I/Q receivers for superior performance, and weatherproof construction. Worth it if you need these modes or want the absolute best.

Only necessary if you need DMR/NXDN or want the best possible performance.

Feature Comparison: What Actually Matters

Digital/P25 Support

Critical for most areas. Most urban and suburban police departments now use digital P25 systems. Without digital capability, you'll hear nothing but static. Only rural departments still commonly use analog.

GPS Auto-Location

Highly convenient. GPS-enabled scanners automatically switch to local frequencies as you travel. Without GPS, you'll need to manually reprogram for each location you visit.

DMR/NXDN Support

Situational. Only the SDS100/SDS200 decode these modes. Most police use P25, but some agencies use DMR or NXDN. Check RadioReference to see what your area uses.

Encryption Decoding

No scanner can do this. If your area's police are encrypted, no scanner at any price will help. This is the growing problem we're fighting againstβ€”learn more about encryption.
